May 13, 2015 - The Madison Heights Community Family Coalition Youth Recognition Award Breakfast was held this morning and several of our Lamphere students were recognized for their community contributions.
Individual Recognitions:
Jake Adams
Lessenger Elementary School, 4th Grade - Nominated by Michelle Charron
Jake volunteered his time every day to help his kindergarten buddy. His kindergarten buddy was having trouble transitioning from lunch back into the classroom. Jake missed a few minutes of his recess every day to help his buddy. He read to him or took him to the computer lab until he was ready to go back into the classroom. Both the kindergarten teacher and I are very proud of Jake and thankful for his help. He truly is a leader because he took the initiative to volunteer to help. He is a leader in the classroom as well.
Maggie Betea

Maggie generously donated her hair to Wigs for Kids. For over 30 years, Wigs for Kids has been providing hair replacement systems and support for children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, radiation Alopecia, Trichotillomania, burns and other medical issues at no cost to children or their families.
Connor Boccaccio
Simonds Elementary School, 2nd Grade - Nominated by Sarah Laurence
Connor helped make several baby blankets and quilts that were donated to his church , Amazing Grace. He has started a savings account to be donated to ELCA World Hunger to buy seeds and animals that will provide long term relief to individual families. Connor also participates in the Cub Scout Food Drive every fall. Every spring, he participates in the spring clean-up day at Red Oaks Nature Center. Finally, Connor helps his neighbors shovel snow, rake leaves, and clean up after storms.

Eion Cass
Simonds Elementary School, 2nd Grade - Nominated by Sarah Laurence
Last summer, Madison Heights was hit with treacherous storms that caused massive flooding of basements in the area. Eion recognized that many families were in distress and lost an abundance of priceless objects in their homes. A local in-home daycare lost all of the toys and materials that were used for the children on a daily basis due to flooding. On his own, Eion decided to take the initiative to help this family. He led his younger siblings in deciding what toys, games, and kid-friendly items they would be willing to part with to help this local daycare. With the support of his family, Eion was able to help the daycare replenish some of their lost items and put smiles back on the faces of the children at the daycare. Eion's giving heart doesn't stop there! This past Christmas Eion chose a local family to adopt for the holidays. Not only did he choose the family, but with the support of his parents, he shopped and wrapped presents as well. He has also participated in a Haiti Relief Project through church and created bracelets to raise money for this organization.
Kayden Crute
Edmonson Elementary School, 1st Grade - Nominated by Leslie Harrell
Kayden generously donated her hair to Locks of Love; a public non-profit organization that provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children who have suffered hair loss. The care and concern that Kayden voluntarily demonstrated to others deserves to be recognized.
Gabe Farneti-Gerstler
Simonds Elementary School, 5th Grade - Nominated by Tina Davis
Gabe is a member of the Simonds Elementary Service and Safety Team. He is an active member of Stage Crafters Community Theatre in Royal Oak, and has volunteered his services in several school holiday concerts. He is participating in the Lamphere High School presentation of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory this April. He has given his time to collect returnable for the Lamphere High School girls soccer team and served as "ball boy" last season. Gabe has also assisted in the Meals on Wheels program in Detroit.

For the last three years in a row Sarah Fireberg has donated her hair to the Wigs for Kids organization. This organization provides hair replacement systems and support for children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, Alopecia, Trichotillomania, burns and other medical issues. They provide the hair replacement systems to children at no cost. We are proud of Sarah's compassion and kindness in taking the time to help other children in need through donating her hair for three years in a row to this incredible organization.

Gina Hanna approached our school secretary, Sue Bobowski, about how she could donate her hair to be created into a hairpiece for a child who really needed it. Sue Bobowski helped her search for an organization to donate to and found Locks of Love. She told Gina about this organization and she was excited to be able to donate her hair. She went out and got her haircut and Sue Bobowski helped her to mail it in. Gina showed her compassion and kindness in taking the time to seek out ways that she could help other children in need. We are proud of Gina for this donation.

Christa is a responsible, self-motivated young lady who continually looks for ways to better herself and others. She has volunteered over 130 hours at various organizations throughout the area including Gleaners Food Bank, Autism Awareness Foundation, Guardian Angel’s Food Pantry, Guardian Angel’s Church, Animal Welfare Society and American House Retirement Homes.

Josh is an active member of Kayla's Faith Keepers, a non-profit organization supporting school-aged cancer patients and their siblings. The organization is named in memory of his sister Kayla, who suffered a long battle with cancer, Josh recently volunteered his time, to hang out on a weekend with a middle school boy who is living with cancer and his sister, who welcomed the time with Kayla’s Faith Keepers.

Lunden's Mission trips to Guatemala and Nicaragua included teaching students, building schools, and building houses. Lunden also volunteered in Detroit for three weeks running a kids camp, and volunteered at Detroit Outreach to provide clothes to the homeless.

Fadi Nadhim is a special person who has a lot of faith and passion. He was born in Iraq but his family came to the US couple years ago as refugees. Unfortunately his father was not able to come with them. Fadi helps out his family by taking care of his siblings and other duties around the house. At school Fadi leads by example and helps his peers by translating when needed. While the family is hopeful that his father will join them soon, Fadi has faithfully taken on many of the responsibilities of being the man of the house.
Dalia Neesan
Lamphere High School, 12th Grade - Nominated by Andrea Gordon
Dalia Neesan has been with the Lamphere School’s Forgotten Harvest Food Distribution Program since its inception 3 years ago. Recently, our food distribution center was elevated to a new status that includes distributing milk, meat, eggs, etc. With this increased opportunity to provide additional food items for our families has come the added responsibility of filling out government forms each time the family arrives to receive their portion. Dalia's bilingual status has helped us tremendously where our Arabic-speaking families are concerned.

Volunteered his time at a local nursing home by carrying items for various residents, and helped people safely get to their rooms. Chris works with his parents at a local business on the weekends and attends Vietnamese school on Sunday for two hours. He is also a member of Men of Page.

Jena’s family is an animal foster family that always has puppies around. She will give them love and whatever else that they need, food, water, pick up poop, etc. She will spend hours at a time playing with each and every one of the puppies, giving them a chance for a much better life.
